Google has announced plans to release an app for its NotebookLM platform, which serves as an artificial intelligence research and writing assistant. Initially introduced as Project Tailwind in 2023, NotebookLM made its debut the following year, with users in India gaining access in June 2024. The platform allows users to compile information into a notebook in various formats, enabling the generation of AI-derived summaries and the ability to pose questions to the chatbot. It also features a unique capability, letting users produce podcast-style audio discussions led by two AI voices on the chosen topic.

A NotebookLM App Is In the Works

In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), the official NotebookLM account confirmed the development of an app interface for the platform while responding to an inquiry from another user. However, further details regarding the app’s availability for Android or iOS users have not been disclosed.

Additionally, specifics surrounding the app’s features, design, and any possible enhancements for paid subscribers were not clarified.

At present, NotebookLM is accessible through its web interface or can be used as a progressive web app (PWA) on mobile devices. The PWA offers an app icon and makes minor adjustments to the interface for smartphone users, yet it lacks the optimization commonly found in other Google applications. Notably, the announcement did not specify a release date for the app that is currently in development.

The platform has seen a spike in popularity following the introduction of its audio overview feature, which utilizes AI to create a discussion based on one or multiple sources. This engaging audio format features two AI hosts in conversation, delving into various aspects of the subject matter.

In response to this growing interest, Google has also introduced a paid version of NotebookLM that provides enhanced usage limits. The basic version accommodates up to 100 notebooks with a maximum of 50 sources each, allowing for 50 chat queries and three audio generations daily. The premium tier, named NotebookLM Plus, offers five times the usage limits along with additional privacy and security features. Users can also access the Plus version through the Google One AI Premium plan.
