Google has introduced a new artificial intelligence feature aimed at helping iPhone users better understand complex online texts. The Simplify tool, which is now being launched in the Google app for iOS, transforms selected text into a more easily digestible format without users needing to leave the web page.
Built on the Gemini AI model developed by Google Research, Simplify focuses on clarifying technical language and jargon for readers. For instance, the tool can elucidate medical terms such as “emphysema” (a condition affecting lung air sacs) and “fibrosis” (the development of dense connective tissue or scarring resulting from damage), aiding users in comprehending reports and academic articles without needing to search for definitions elsewhere.
In user testing, Google noted that participants considered the simplified text to be significantly more helpful when compared to the original complex wording. However, the company also acknowledged that the study had certain limitations and emphasized the need for continuous monitoring for potential inaccuracies.
To use the feature in the iOS Google app, users can highlight any text within a website and select the Simplify option from the menu that appears. In response to inquiries about the availability of Simplify for Android and desktop Chrome users, Google spokesperson Jennifer Kutz stated, “we don’t have anything to announce yet, but we’re always looking to bring useful features to more of our products.”
