Google is reportedly in the process of implementing support for a second language in its Gemini Live feature. According to sources, the tech company based in Mountain View aims to enhance user experience by allowing interactions with the AI chatbot in two languages through both speech and text. This enhancement will enable Gemini Live to not only comprehend spoken inputs but also to reply in the same language, expanding its usability for multilingual users. Evidence of this feature was first detected in December, and recent updates to Google’s support documentation have confirmed this development.
Gemini Live May Support a Second Language
Currently, Gemini Live allows users to engage in real-time voice conversations and switch languages seamlessly within a single sentence, with the AI adept at understanding and responding effectively. Users can also prompt Gemini to speak in two languages simultaneously, which is particularly advantageous for those who communicate in hybrid language forms like Hinglish or Spanglish.
Despite its functionality, there are instances where Gemini Live fails to recognize the second language, even after multiple attempts. Furthermore, this dual-language support is confined to the Gemini Live feature, limiting its application across other platforms.
A report from Android Authority has revealed that Google is developing a settings option that will enable users to select a second language. This functionality was discovered during an APK teardown of the Google app beta version 16.9.39.sa.arm64. The report indicates that the settings option is accessible by activating certain flags, yet the feature remains invisible during active use, likely due to a server-side implementation still in progress.
In addition, Google has updated its Gemini Live support page, expanding the number of supported languages from 30 to over 45. The new updates inform users that they can now add up to two languages for communication with Gemini Live.
As it stands, the impact of introducing a second language on the Gemini AI assistant across Android devices, text-based interactions, and within Google Workspace applications remains to be seen. Google has not yet issued an official timeline for the rollout of this feature.
