Google has introduced a new “guided learning” mode for its Gemini AI, designed to enhance users’ comprehension of complex topics rather than simply providing answers. This feature, described as a “learning companion,” offers step-by-step assistance through questions and support, according to CEO Sundar Pichai in a recent blog post.

The guided learning functionality can present answers in various formats, including images, videos, and interactive quizzes. Google collaborated with students, educators, and learning scientists to ensure that this mode effectively aids in grasping new concepts, as Pichai emphasized.

The trend of AI integration into educational settings is growing, potentially addressing concerns about the perception of AI tools as facilitators of academic dishonesty. With the introduction of such features as Gemini’s guided learning mode and ChatGPT’s newly announced study mode, the focus may shift towards fostering actual learning. However, it remains uncertain if students will choose these features over the traditional method of seeking immediate answers from AI.

In addition to these announcements, Google is allowing students aged 18 and older from the US, Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil to sign up for a complimentary 12-month subscription to its AI Pro Plan, provided they register by October 6th. The company also pledged a $1 billion investment over three years aimed at enhancing American education, which includes AI literacy initiatives, research funding, and cloud computing resources, as noted by Pichai.
