On Thursday, Google introduced a new experimental artificial intelligence (AI) feature called Ask for Me through its Search Lab. This innovative tool, now accessible in the Google Search app for select users in the U.S. on both Android and iOS, enables users to utilize an AI chatbot to contact businesses for inquiries. To access this feature, users need to enroll in Google’s Search Labs and enable the functionality.
Google Unveils Ask for Me Feature in Search Labs
Rose Yao, Google’s Vice President of Product Management, shared the announcement of this new feature on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. Designed to enhance the Google Search experience, Ask for Me allows users to prompt the AI to reach out to businesses for specific information needs.
When users activate this feature, it will be automatically incorporated into their Google Search experience. Currently, it supports inquiries related to nail salons and auto repair facilities. Users who submit related queries will see a new Ask for Me card that features a call and sparkle icon, accompanied by a brief description stating, “Google will call local services to ask about their prices and availability.”
By clicking the ‘Get Started’ button on the card, users are taken to a full-screen interface where they can choose the specific service they require. For instance, an inquiry regarding auto repair will present options like scheduled maintenance, oil changes, tire rotations, and more.
After specifying the service, users will need to provide details about their vehicle, including the make, model year, and mileage. They will also be prompted to select a preferred appointment time and choose whether they’d like updates via SMS or email.
Following the completion of these steps, the AI leverages Gemini’s capabilities to make a natural language call to the selected businesses to gather information about prices and availability. Users will receive a comprehensive report summarizing the findings, which will be sent via SMS or email within 30 minutes.
