On Thursday, Google announced the listing of its AI-driven NotebookLM application for both Android and iOS platforms. Although the apps are not yet available for public download, users can pre-register, ensuring that the app will be installed automatically upon its release. The App Store indicates a launch date of May 20, coinciding with the opening day of Google I/O 2025. Discussions about developing a mobile version of the platform have been ongoing since its introduction in June 2024, with testing reportedly commencing in March.
NotebookLM Set to Launch as Mobile Applications
The alert regarding the NotebookLM app listings was first reported by 9to5Google. Currently, the application can be found on both Google Play and the App Store. While the Android listing lacks a specified launch date, the iOS version clearly states May 20 as the expected rollout date.
NotebookLM functions as an artificial intelligence research assistant, allowing users to input various types of sources, including documents, URLs, YouTube videos, and plain text. This content is analyzed by the AI, enabling a range of features.
Users can request the AI to generate summaries, study guides, FAQs, and more. Additionally, the platform can transform these sources into AI-generated audio discussions, facilitating interactive conversations through a chatbot about the provided content.
In June 2024, Raiza Martin, Senior Product Manager at Google Labs, spoke with Gadgets 360 about the company’s interest in developing a mobile application for NotebookLM, confirming that the subject was under internal consideration. Furthermore, a report from 9to5Google noted that testing of the applications initiated in March.
Screenshots released on the app listing page indicate that the application’s interface closely resembles that of the mobile website. Users will see a home screen displaying a list of existing notebooks with an option to create new ones at the bottom.
The range of source formats supported in the app is limited compared to the web version. Users can only upload PDF files, website URLs, YouTube links, and copied text, whereas the website permits sources from Google Drive (Docs and Slides), TXT files, and audio formats as well.
The app will feature an Audio Overviews capability, enabling users to create podcast-style audio discussions without the need to access the website. Moreover, it will allow users to share sources to NotebookLM from any location on their device. Notably, the iOS version of the app is expected to have a file size of 88.4MB.
