On Wednesday, Google announced that Workspace users will now have access to Gems, custom artificial intelligence (AI) tools embedded within its suite of applications. Previously, these AI experts were available exclusively through the Gemini app and website since August 2024. This expansion marks a significant enhancement for users of Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Drive, and Gmail, where Gems can be accessed via the Gemini side panel.
Gemini Gems Are Coming to Google Workspace Apps
In a recent blog post, Google detailed the integration of Gems into its Workspace applications. It is important to note that this feature is available solely to individual and enterprise Workspace users who have paid accounts and already utilize the Gemini side panel.
Gems function as simplified versions of the Gemini chatbot, enabling users to provide instructions just once for specific tasks. This functionality streamlines the process and saves time, as users are not required to repeat the same instructions. Furthermore, Gems can enhance their outputs by utilizing additional data from text, files, and images, which improves response accuracy.

The new side panel will feature several pre-made Gems that users can utilize immediately. Among these are the Writing Editor, which offers constructive feedback on text; the Brainstormer, providing creative ideas for projects; and the Sales Pitch Ideator, capable of generating compelling pitches for clients, among other tools.
In addition to the pre-built options, users have the ability to create their own Gems from scratch. By selecting the “Create a new Gem” option in the Gems menu on the side panel, they can define specific roles and instructions for their custom creations. These Gems can be designed to write and analyze code, generate social media posts, and deliver relevant summaries, among other tasks.
Since Gems are integrated into Google Workspace applications, users can easily transfer the outputs directly into their work across different apps. Once developed, a custom Gem will be accessible within all Workspace applications.
