Google is in the process of introducing real-time captions for its Gemini Live feature. According to reports, this new functionality will display text captions centrally on the screen, allowing users to follow verbal interactions with greater ease. This improvement is particularly beneficial for those who wish to engage in hands-free conversations with the chatbot without increasing the sound volume. Additionally, the tech company based in Mountain View is said to have included customization options for adjusting the size and style of the captions.
Real-Time Captions in Gemini Live Appears for Some Users
The feature was first identified by 9to5Google, with several users on Reddit sharing their experiences of seeing captions while utilizing Gemini Live. As reported by Android Authority, the rollout is associated with the Google app version 16.21.57, which is not yet broadly accessible.
Once activated, a new dialogue box icon will appear at the top-right corner of the Gemini Live interface for users who have access. This icon allows users to toggle captions on or off simply by tapping it. When enabled, everything that Gemini outputs will be displayed on the screen in real time.
Notably, with captions activated, users will not need to adjust their device’s volume to communicate with Gemini Live. Typically, if the volume level is insufficient, users are prompted to increase it for the feature to function. However, this requirement is lifted when captions are turned on, facilitating interactions in quiet environments or public spaces without drawing attention.

Google is likely to implement this feature through a phased rollout, with more users anticipated to gain access in the upcoming days.
