Last week, Google advanced the Gemini 2.5 Pro artificial intelligence (AI) model into public preview. Initially introduced last month as an experimental tier with limited rate restrictions, the latest version of the Mountain View tech company’s flagship AI model now offers higher rate limits for users of its Gemini application programming interface (API) and Google AI Studio.

Pricing Details for Gemini 2.5 Pro

In a blog post, Google highlighted the robust initial interest from developers for the Gemini 2.5 Pro, prompting an expansion of access to this large language model (LLM). The company confirmed that the foundation model is now publicly available through the Gemini API in Google Studio, accompanied by increased rate limits. However, the AI model is not yet available on Vertex AI, with plans for its introduction to that platform forthcoming.

Regarding pricing, Gemini 2.5 Pro comes in two tiers. The first tier allows for regular rate limits capped at 200,000 tokens. Once a developer surpasses this limit, the second tier pricing structure is activated.

Under the regular rate limit, the cost for Gemini 2.5 Pro is set at $1.25 (approximately ₹107) per one million input tokens, while output tokens are priced at $10 (approximately ₹858) per million. Input tokens encompass various formats, including text, images, audio, and video, and pricing for output tokens takes into account reasoning tokens.

For usage exceeding the 200,000 token limit, developers will incur a charge of $2.50 (around ₹214) for every million input tokens and $15 (approximately ₹1,290) per million output tokens. It’s important to note that the experimental version of the Gemini model remains available at no charge but with lower rate limits.

Google has stated that its pricing is kept “competitive,” and when compared to similar offerings, the Gemini 2.5 Pro model appears to be a more cost-effective choice. For example, Anthropic’s primary model, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, charges $3 per million input tokens and $15 for output tokens.

In the competitive landscape, OpenAI, another key player in the AI sector, has even higher pricing for its reasoning models. The o1 AI model’s input cost stands at $15 per million tokens, while output tokens are priced at $60 (about ₹5,150) per million. However, OpenAI does provide options for cached input tokens, offering a discounted rate of $7.50 (around ₹640) per million.
