On Wednesday, Google initiated the testing phase for a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature on Google TV, known as News Brief. This feature is designed to summarize key news headlines of the day utilizing the Gemini AI model, making them easily accessible for users. The announcement followed an initial preview at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 earlier this month. In addition to News Brief, the platform plans to roll out various other AI functionalities, including conversational searches and AI-generated screensavers. Currently, only a limited group of select users will have access to the News Brief feature.
Google TV Begins Testing News Brief Feature
A Google Community Manager detailed the upcoming launch of the AI feature on a support page. According to the announcement, some users in the United States will soon see the feature appear in their For You section, where it will be labeled as News Brief.
The News Brief feature periodically evaluates the most significant news stories throughout the day and creates narrated summaries for quick consumption by viewers. Accompanying these summaries will be related YouTube videos on the same topics. Google has indicated that only content from “trusted news sources” will be highlighted, although specific names of publishers or channels have not been disclosed.
Emphasizing its experimental nature, Google confirmed that these news summaries are generated through Gemini models and are subject to human review. However, the company did not identify any particular model names, and users can expect updates to the News Brief throughout the day.
While specific sourcing for the news stories has not been clarified, there is speculation that content will primarily derive from YouTube videos. Moreover, it remains uncertain whether the news summaries will be personalized for users based on their viewing history or search activities within Google.
Google has also established a feedback mechanism for Google TV users to report any issues they may encounter with the new feature. Users can activate this option by pressing the Google Assistant or microphone button on their remote and stating, “Send feedback.” They will then be directed to follow on-screen instructions to provide their input. Additionally, Google TV users have the option to use their smartphones as a keyboard for typing feedback.
