Google is currently evaluating the introduction of an “AI Mode” button on its Search homepage, with numerous users reporting sightings of the feature in various locations on the site. Screenshots shared on social media suggest that the tech giant based in Mountain View is assessing different placements for the button ahead of a potential rollout to a broader audience. Interestingly, in some instances, the AI Mode button appears to be replacing the traditional “I’m Feeling Lucky” button.
Will Google Remove the “I’m Feeling Lucky” Button to Add AI Mode?
Technology News was the first to highlight this development, as several users on X (formerly Twitter) reported the emergence of the AI Mode button on the Google Search homepage. Some users identified the button next to the Lens icon in the text input area, while others noted its replacement of the well-known “I’m Feeling Lucky” option.
Variations of the button have been spotted, including one with a rainbow outline and others in a pill shape that emphasizes the text. This suggests that Google is experimenting to determine the optimal button placement to encourage user engagement with the new feature. However, it remains unclear whether all users who observed the button were located in the United States or if the test extends globally.
The “I’m Feeling Lucky” button has been a staple of Google Search since the launch of the search engine. It directs users to the top search result when a query is entered, effectively bypassing the usual results page. If no query is submitted, it redirects users to the Doodles page.
Earlier this month, Google made AI Mode available to all users in the U.S. who opted into the feature through Google Labs, eliminating the previous waitlist. Nonetheless, the feature has yet to be made available to users outside the United States. Initially introduced in March, AI Mode represents an enhanced version of AI Overviews, designed to tackle complex queries and deliver more relevant search results for in-depth exploration of topics.
