Some users of Google Search have begun to encounter the platform’s new AI Mode chatbot feature during their searches. Reports from various users on X and Threads indicate that Google is experimenting with different placements for the AI Mode tab. Some examples show it integrated into the search bar next to the “search by image” option, while others feature it in place of the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button located beneath the search interface.
The design of the AI Mode button has also shown some differences among users. Some have observed a rotating rainbow border appearing when their cursor hovers over the button. In instances where AI Mode replaces the “I’m Feeling Lucky” option, this colorful border appears to be part of the default design, making the AI chatbot button more visually distinctive among Google’s functions.
On May 1st, Google announced that a select group of users in the United States would soon see the AI Mode feature in Google Search. Screenshots circulating from these tests provide insight into where the feature might appear if it becomes more widely available. Currently, a Google spokesperson, Ashley Thompson, informed Technology News that the AI Mode is limited to users within Google’s experimental Labs environment.
“We frequently conduct tests to explore various ways for users to access our beneficial features,” Thompson stated. “This is just one of many experiments we are undertaking.”
While it is uncertain whether the “I’m Feeling Lucky” feature will be officially replaced by AI Mode, the possibility of such a change could be concerning for users who appreciate that specific function. The button, which directs users to the first website among search results, has been a longstanding element of Google’s homepage since its inception. This move might suggest that Google views the responses generated by AI Mode as potentially more effective than allowing users to bypass the traditional search results page.
