Google’s Pixel smartphones are set to gain a sought-after feature known as Call Screening, which has been available in select markets such as the US. According to recent reports, the tech giant is planning to introduce this functionality in India, nearly seven years after its initial launch. The Call Screening feature utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to provide smart reply options during calls; however, users will need to manually select these options to respond to callers. In a similar vein, Apple is reportedly preparing to roll out comparable call screening features in its upcoming iOS 26 update.
Call Screening on Pixel Phones May Need Regulatory Approval
Information uncovered during an APK teardown of the Phone by Google app suggests that the company has intentions to implement this feature in India. According to Android Authority, one of the files identified refers to “hi_in,” indicating a focus on the Hindi language and Indian localization. This resource is likely intended for use by the Call Screening functionality within Google’s Pixel phone app.

In addition, the publication found a reference to “enableIndiaManualScreeningOnlyMode,” indicating that users in India may initially have to rely on a manual version of Call Screening, as opposed to the automated functionality available in the US. If this manual option is made available, users will be required to tap a Screen call button for incoming calls and then select from multiple reply options.
While Google has not officially commented on the timeline for launching Call Screening for Pixel users in India, there is speculation that the company may be awaiting regulatory approval before proceeding with the rollout. It remains unclear whether the feature will be available solely in English and Hindi, or if support for additional languages might be introduced later.
This is not the first indication that Google is moving towards implementing Call Screening support. Back in January 2024, a user managed to activate this feature on a rooted OnePlus 7 device running AOSPA, a modified version of Android, after downloading a Hindi language pack.
Furthermore, Apple is also expected to unveil a similar feature with iOS 26 later this year. This will prompt callers for information, allowing users to make informed decisions on whether to answer or reject incoming calls. This feature is anticipated to complement the Live Voicemail function, which was introduced to iPhone users in India through the iOS 18 update.
