Google is reportedly working on an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) feature designed to enhance its Search functionality. Sources indicate that the tech giant, based in Mountain View, California, is developing an AI Mode that will provide users with a conversational interface to interact with searched queries. This new feature will be distinct from the existing AI Overviews option, which offers brief AI-generated summaries of topics.
Google Search Could Reportedly Get an AI Mode
The Information has reported that the anticipated AI Mode will soon be integrated into Google Search. Citing information from an undisclosed source involved in the project, the report suggests that this interface will resemble the Web version of Google’s Gemini chatbot. This initiative appears to be aimed at broadening the reach of the Gemini chatbot to a wider audience.
According to information from Business of Apps, Google is currently facing challenges in keeping pace with OpenAI, particularly concerning the user base of ChatGPT. Data indicates that in October, Gemini had around 42 million active users, while OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, recently stated that the ChatGPT platform achieved a staggering 300 million weekly active users.
This notable gap has prompted Google to potentially roll out the Gemini AI to its extensive user base through the Search platform. Plans for the AI Mode include its positioning underneath the search text field, to the left of the standard “All,” “Images,” and “Videos” tabs.
Upon selecting the AI Mode, users are expected to transition to a new interface that mirrors the functionalities of the Gemini Web client. After submitting a search query, users should be able to view contextual information, relevant URLs, and associated webpages, along with an option for follow-up inquiries. Google is optimistic that this enhancement will help boost the overall performance of its search engine.
Moreover, there are rumors that the AI Mode will accommodate both text and voice prompts, thereby facilitating a more hands-free user experience. As of now, the timeline for the launch of this new AI feature in Google Search remains unclear.
