Google has announced significant updates to its Gemini platform. Revealed on Friday, these changes aim to enhance user experience by refining the language used within Gemini tools and optimizing the AI chatbot’s ability to interface with various applications. The update is being rolled out to all Google Workspace users, while the changes to terminology will be implemented across the board for all users.

Google Implements Changes to Gemini

In a recent blog post, the company outlined these two key modifications. The first notable change is the rebranding of Gemini extensions, which are now referred to simply as “apps.” While the underlying software retains its original name, the reference to extensions is being eliminated from both the app and the Gemini web client.

The previously named extensions menu has now been rebranded as Apps. The updated description reads, “Bring it all together with Gemini and your favourite apps,” replacing the former phrasing, “Gemini Extensions help you bring it all together.” Moreover, the directive previously stating, “Turn Gemini Extensions on or off anytime,” has been modified to “Manage which apps Gemini connects to.”

This rebranding effort seems to be a strategic move to give users the impression that the AI is directly integrating with apps rather than relying on a separate extension framework. Such a shift could enhance user confidence when granting the AI access to various applications. Despite the terminology changes, the company emphasizes that there will be no alterations to the existing functionality of Gemini.

The second update introduces a more advanced feature. The rebranded “apps” will now utilize Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking (experimental) technology. This update is expected to result in improved performance, along with enhanced reasoning capabilities that prioritize both efficiency and speed.

In practical terms, users may find that the Gemini assistant is better at handling complex app-related tasks and interpreting commands that are less clearly articulated. These enhancements stem from the 2.0 Flash Thinking model, which focuses on advanced reasoning. However, it remains to be seen if this focus on reasoning will impact the speed at which app-based tasks are completed, as such models often require more time to process information for improved outcomes.
