Google is set to enhance the virtual assistant experience for Android smartphone users by transitioning to its new AI-powered assistant, Gemini. Announced on Friday, the tech giant is gradually phasing out Google Assistant in favor of Gemini, with plans to complete the shift over the next several months. The transition will establish Gemini as the primary virtual assistant on more devices, and Google aims to extend its use to tablets, Android Auto, and accessories like headphones and earphones.
Google Plans to Shift Android Users to Gemini Assistant
The Gemini AI assistant has been available to Android smartphone users for some time, allowing those with compatible devices to opt for it as their default virtual assistant. While users could choose Gemini for its advanced features, many have been able to stick with Google Assistant, which has been the default option.
Moving forward, users will find that the option to use Google Assistant will no longer be available. Gemini will automatically become the default assistant on all Android devices, although users still have the freedom to select any third-party virtual assistant if they prefer.
In a blog post, Brian Marquardt, Senior Director of Product Management for the Gemini app at Google, detailed the upgrade for Android smartphone users. He noted that Google Assistant was introduced in 2016 to facilitate voice-based interactions, and now the company is reimagining this experience with an emphasis on “AI at its core” to provide a more personalized service.
Google plans to transition more mobile users from Google Assistant to Gemini in the coming months. By the end of this year, the legacy assistant will likely be rendered inaccessible on most devices, and it will no longer be available for download from app stores. Devices lacking AI capabilities might be the only exceptions where the original assistant will remain.
Furthermore, Google intends to apply this strategy across its entire ecosystem. Marquardt confirmed that tablets, devices with Android Auto, and smartphone-connected gadgets like headphones and smartwatches will also receive the Gemini upgrade. A revamped AI-driven Gemini experience is also on the way for Android home devices, including speakers, displays, and smart TVs. Additional information regarding the transition will be disclosed in the upcoming months.
