Google has announced the introduction of speech translation to its Meet platform. During its I/O event on Tuesday, the company unveiled a new feature powered by Gemini, designed to translate spoken communication into the preferred language of the conversation partner.
According to Google, the AI-generated translations will retain the original speaker’s voice, tone, and emotional inflections. The new offering is currently being rolled out in beta for users who subscribe to either Google’s AI Pro plan or the recently introduced AI Ultra subscription, which is priced at $249.99 per month.
During a demonstration, Google showcased a scenario in which an English-speaking user joins a meeting with a Spanish-speaking colleague. With the Gemini speech translation feature activated, the platform provides an AI-generated English translation, seamlessly integrating the vocal nuances of both speakers.
Earlier this year, Microsoft Teams also introduced a similar AI translation feature in a preview capacity.
At this stage, the translation capability in Meet supports only English and Spanish, although Google has plans to expand language support to include Italian, German, and Portuguese in the upcoming weeks.
