On Monday, Google revealed plans to broaden the reach of its recently introduced AI Mode feature, making it accessible to additional applications and users. The latest integration includes Google Lens, which now boasts multimodal capabilities. Furthermore, those with free subscriptions to Google Labs will also be able to utilize this feature. Originally launched in March as an experimental tool, this AI capability enhances the established AI Overviews, providing insights on complex topics, multifaceted search queries, and subjects that typically require several searches to gather comprehensive information.
Google Lens Will Now Incorporate AI Mode Search Results
In a blog post, Google communicated its decision to extend AI Mode. Positive user feedback highlighted the feature’s quick response times and the thoroughness of its answers. Previously, the service was exclusively available to US-based Google Labs users holding an active Google One AI Premium subscription.
The latest update will make AI Mode available to millions of additional Labs users across the United States, including those who sign up for Labs moving forward. Users of both Android and iOS versions of the Google app can now take advantage of this feature. While it remains limited to the US for the time being, Google intends to roll out the program to more international markets in the future.
Additionally, AI Mode is now integrated into Google Lens. This feature will accommodate multimodal input; when users capture an image or upload one from their camera, combined with a query, the AI feature will generate an in-depth response along with relevant links for further exploration. The AI Mode in Lens operates on a customized version of the Gemini model.

The blog post featured an example demonstrating the capability of this tool: a user capturing an image of books arranged on a shelf while seeking recommendations. The Gemini-powered AI Mode successfully identified the books in the picture, executing individual searches to gather information and identify similar titles.
After conducting these background queries, the system provided tailored book recommendations, complete with links for users to delve deeper into each title. Users also have the option to pose follow-up queries within the same interface, allowing them to refine their selections.
