Google is reportedly extending its AI search feature, known as AI Mode, to Android tablets. The update is being rolled out through the latest version of the Google app, with the tech company based in Mountain View focusing on larger display devices. Generally, tablets receive new functionalities after smartphones and desktop variations due to the need for size optimization. Currently, the AI Mode on Android tablets does not appear to be tailored for landscape viewing, resulting in a stretched interface.
AI Mode Detected on Pixel Tablet
The feature was identified on an Android tablet by 9to5Google, specifically in the Google app version 16.30, which is still in its beta phase. Although staff members from Gadgets 360 have not yet observed this feature, the report indicates it was available on the Pixel Tablet, which was launched in select markets this year.
Screenshots shared by the report reveal that beta users can now access AI Mode through the Discover feed on their home screens. Similar to smartphones, the feature is positioned beneath the search bar, alongside Google Lens and translation options. A shortcut to this feature can also be accessed via the Pixel Launcher or home screen widget, which can be adjusted through the Google app settings.
According to the publication, the AI Mode on tablets shares a layout similar to that of Android smartphones. However, in landscape orientation, the prompt bar appears stretched and lacks proper optimization. The system delivers responses in a manner consistent with other interfaces.
Users can tap to access the familiar prompt bar that includes options for image uploads and Google Lens, although this layout is less optimized in landscape mode. While it may not provide the best user experience, it remains functional, particularly compared to navigating to google.com/aimode through a browser. Currently, the latest version of the Google app available on iPads does not include the AI Mode feature.
