The AI Mode shortcut in the Google app, which first appeared for Android users participating in the Search Labs experiment back in April, is now becoming more widely accessible to users around the globe. The shortcut icon is prominently displayed in two locations: as the third icon in the Google app’s widget and within the app’s search box. These shortcuts are designed to facilitate quick access to the AI-powered search interface.
AI Mode’s Shortcut Icon Reportedly Rolling Out Widely
A report from 9to5Google indicates that the rollout of the AI Mode widget shortcut has expanded to a larger user base on Android devices. Google is deploying this feature through app version 16.28, equipping the 4×1 widget with the new AI Mode shortcut in the search bar.

Typically, this search bar includes two shortcuts—one for the microphone and another for Google Lens. With the introduction of the new feature, Android users will now notice a third icon on the far right. This icon, featuring a magnifying glass alongside the Gemini sparkle symbol, is encased within its own circle. For those who do not see the icon immediately, they can long-press the widget to access the settings or customization panel, navigate to shortcuts, and select AI Mode from the second position in the list.
The Google app also provides an alternative way to access AI Mode. Users who have opted into the AI Mode experiment through Search Labs will find the icon integrated into the search box. For those not enrolled, the icon displays below the search bar alongside the microphone, Lens, and Lens gallery options.
Additionally, the report notes that the icon may appear in the Discover feed, although staff members at Gadgets 360 have yet to observe it there. This could suggest that the feature is not yet being rolled out outside of the U.S. Meanwhile, U.S. users also have access to the Search Live functionality within AI Mode, which can be activated through Search Labs.
