Google has introduced new features for Drive that promise to enhance the experience for Workspace users by providing additional insights into their saved videos. The company has expanded its Gemini AI capabilities, previously limited to documents and PDFs, to now encompass video files. This allows users to extract meaningful information from videos without needing to view them in full.
The Gemini feature within Drive employs a user-friendly chatbot interface that can quickly generate summaries of video content or highlight specific details. For instance, users can query Gemini to identify action items from recorded meetings or to pinpoint key updates and products featured in announcement videos. This functionality aims to streamline the process of gathering information, eliminating the need for manual note-taking.
To use this feature, videos must have captions enabled. Access to the feature can be obtained through Google Drive’s overlay previewer or a new browser tab. Currently, it is available in English for Google Workspace and Google One AI Premium users, as well as those who have previously acquired Gemini Business or Enterprise add-ons. The full rollout may take several weeks for all users.
This tool could prove particularly useful for locating specific information in extensive meeting recordings.
In addition to the Gemini expansion, Google is also phasing out another Workspace feature—engagement metrics for Drive videos. The Drive video player will now display view counts in the Analytics section of the Details panel, granting users insights into how often their videos have been accessed.
