On Tuesday, Google eliminated approximately 200 positions within its global business unit, which handles sales and partnerships, according to a report from The Information citing an insider.

Major technology companies have been shifting their focus toward investments in data centers and artificial intelligence, while reducing expenditures in other sectors.

The company clarified in a statement to Reuters that it is implementing a limited number of changes within teams, aimed at enhancing collaboration and improving its responsiveness to customer needs.

Earlier reports indicated that Google had previously laid off hundreds of employees from its platforms and devices division, which includes the Android operating system, Pixel devices, and the Chrome web browser, among other products.

In January 2023, Alphabet, Google’s parent company, announced a plan to reduce its workforce by 12,000 positions, accounting for six percent of its total staff. The company reported having 183,323 employees as of December 31, 2022, in a filing from February.

Other significant workforce reductions in the tech sector have included Meta, the parent company of Facebook, which laid off about five percent of its lowest-performing employees in January while accelerating hiring for machine learning engineers.

Additionally, Microsoft cut 650 jobs from its Xbox division in September, while Amazon made layoffs across several departments, including communications. Apple also reduced its workforce by around 100 roles in its digital services unit last year, as reported by various media outlets.
