Google Classroom is set to introduce a new artificial intelligence (AI) functionality that enables the generation of questions on specific topics based on content provided within the platform. This feature is currently accessible to Google Workspace users subscribed to the Education tier. Utilizing the Gemini AI, this tool can create an extensive array of questions that educators can use to gauge students’ understanding of lessons, book chapters, or various subjects. Additionally, the AI-generated questions can be exported to Google Docs or Google Forms for further use.

Google Classroom Can Now Generate Text-Dependent Questions

In a recent blog post, the technology giant from Mountain View announced that this new question-generation feature follows the earlier introduction of a vocabulary list-generation feature. With the addition of this AI tool, educators can efficiently create questions to assess students’ comprehension of specific topics.

This new capability is classified as a text-dependent AI feature, meaning Gemini relies solely on the data shared with it to formulate the questions. At present, educators have the option to upload files directly from Google Drive or manually input text into Google Classroom.

After the input text has been provided, Gemini automatically generates questions or quizzes tailored to the user’s specifications. The AI tool also grants educators a degree of control over the customization of various question elements.

Teachers can choose the specific skills they want students to demonstrate, such as craft and structure, making inferences, point of view, evaluating arguments, among others. Furthermore, the tool allows users to select question formats including multiple-choice, open-ended, short responses, and extended responses. Educators can also specify the grade level of the questions and the quantity of questions to be generated.

Upon completing the information entry, Gemini produces a set of questions for students, which can be exported to Google Forms or Google Docs. Google indicates that this feature is particularly useful for assessing student comprehension following the completion of a lesson.

The rollout of this feature is currently underway for Google Workspace for Education subscribers and those who have existing Gemini Education add-ons. The company notes that it may take several weeks for all eligible users to receive the update.
