Fans of fantasy literature have something to anticipate with enthusiasm. On Thursday, Amazon Studios revealed plans to adapt the cult favorite novel Good Omens, co-written by Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett, into a six-part miniseries set to be released in 2018.
Each episode will run for one hour, with assurances from Amazon Studios that the entire series has been crafted by Neil Gaiman, who will also take on the role of showrunner. The project will be a collaborative effort with BBC Studios, Narrativia, and The Blank Corporation, in partnership with BBC Worldwide.
Following its debut on Amazon Prime Video, the series will also be made available on BBC in the UK. The executive production team includes Neil Gaiman, Caroline Skinner (notable for Doctor Who), and Chris Sussman (of Fleabag fame) for BBC Studios, as well as Rob Wilkins (Choosing to Die) and Rod Brown (Going Postal) for Narrativia.
While the original novel was introduced to readers in 1990, the forthcoming series will be set in the present year, 2018. For those unfamiliar with the book, it offers a humorous take on the Apocalypse, featuring a unique cast: the last surviving member of the Witchfinder Army, a descendant of the sole accurate prophet, the Anti-Christ, an angel, and a demon, who all join forces to prevent the world’s end.
Neil Gaiman expressed his excitement, stating, “Nearly thirty years ago, Terry Pratchett and I penned the most entertaining novel we could envision about the world’s end, filled with angels, demons, an eleven-year-old Antichrist, witchfinders, and the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. It has become a cherished read for many. Now, after three decades, it’s set to reach the screen. I couldn’t imagine better partners than BBC Studios for this adaptation, and I only wish Sir Terry were here to witness it.”
Joe Lewis, Head of Comedy and Drama at Amazon Studios, remarked, “With a narrative that stretches across both the universe and time itself, Neil Gaiman has crafted one of the most expansive stories in television history. We are thrilled to collaborate with BBC Studios to bring this remarkable book by Neil and Terry to life for our Prime members worldwide.”
