The nominations for the 2024 Golden Globe Awards were unveiled last night, spotlighting Greta Gerwig’s vibrant film Barbie, which has made a significant impact at the box office this year. The film leads with an impressive total of 10 nominations, including Best Musical or Comedy, and acting nominations for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the supporting category. The awards show has introduced two new categories this year to enhance its recognition of entertainment, including a ‘Cinematic and Box Office Achievement’ category. This award honors films that have grossed a minimum of $150 million, with at least $100 million earned in the US. Eight contenders are vying for this accolade, among them Barbie, Oppenheimer, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The Best Stand-Up Comedian category highlights the industry’s top stand-up talent, encompassing performances across cable, streaming, or live venues. The Golden Globe Awards differentiate themselves by honoring both film and television, categorizing them further by genre and not focusing on technical achievements such as editing or cinematography. In the drama film category, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer features alongside Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, the acclaimed legal thriller Anatomy of a Fall, and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest. Cillian Murphy has earned a nomination for Best Actor portraying J. Robert Oppenheimer, while Nolan contends for both Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Sandra Hüller is garnering strong accolades this year for her performances as a widow accused of murder in Anatomy of a Fall and as a perplexed spouse of a Nazi officer in The Zone of Interest. She is nominated for Best Lead Female Actor in a Drama for the former role, competing against standout performers such as Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Carey Mulligan (Maestro), and Greta Lee (Past Lives). Meanwhile, Emma Stone secures another nomination for her work in Poor Things, a collaboration under Yorgos Lanthimos, also contending for honors alongside her co-stars Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe in the musical or comedy category.

As the television landscape showcases its talent, the acclaimed fourth season of Succession leads the nominations with nine nods, including Best Drama Series. HBO’s The Last of Us, based on a popular video game, is recognized for its ability to appeal to both gamers and general audiences, with co-stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey nominated for their performances. Other contenders in the drama series category include Netflix’s season six of The Crown and 1923. Meanwhile, the best comedy category features key entries such as The Bear season 2 and Barry season 4.
