On Thursday, Google initiated the rollout of an enhanced feature for Gmail aimed at improving email search efficiency for users. Known as ‘Most Relevant,’ this innovative sorting option employs artificial intelligence (AI) to prioritize emails deemed more significant, shifting away from the conventional chronological sorting method. Users will still have access to existing filter options that allow for more precise search results. Additionally, Gmail has recently integrated a new Gemini feature that can automatically generate calendar events from information found within emails.
Gmail Will Now Showcase “Most Relevant” Search Results
In a blog announcement, the tech giant based in Mountain View revealed that this new feature will be accessible to all users with personal Gmail accounts on both the web and mobile platforms (Android and iOS). Plans are in place to extend this feature to Business accounts in the near future.
According to Google, this tool is designed to facilitate the search for specific emails, particularly in the context of a cluttered inbox. Historically, users have had to enter keywords related to their desired emails, with results being displayed either in chronological order or featuring one top result followed by others.

Following a keyword search, Gmail users will observe a new dropdown menu on the search results page. This menu will present two options: ‘Most Recent’ and ‘Most Relevant’. Selecting ‘Most Recent’ will retain the traditional chronological layout, while the ‘Most Relevant’ choice triggers the application of AI technology to modify the way results are presented.
According to the company, this AI-driven mode evaluates several factors including recency, the frequency of clicks on emails, and frequent contacts. Consequently, emails from senders the user has engaged with most will ascend higher in the search results than those from less frequent contacts. Google asserts that this approach is more likely to surfacing the emails users are searching for at the top, significantly reducing the time and effort needed to sift through extensive email lists.
It is important to note that although this feature leverages AI, it does not utilize generative AI models like the Gemini functionalities integrated into Gmail. Instead, it employs a machine learning-based ranking system that harnesses AI-driven search algorithms, natural language processing (NLP) models, and behavioral analysis methods to highlight relevant emails.
