Gmail has received an update featuring a new artificial intelligence-driven capability, as part of the Google Workspace May feature rollout. Google, headquartered in Mountain View, unveiled that it is introducing summary cards for lengthy emails and extended email threads. These summary cards will automatically be positioned at the top of the email, delivering users essential context about the message, generated using Gemini AI. Additionally, users can expect fresh AI functionalities in Google Chat, Google Docs, and Google Meet.

AI Summaries Now Automatically Displayed in Gmail

According to the company, users with an active subscription to Google Workspace will experience a change in how they view email summaries on Gmail. Previously, users needed to open an email and click the Gemini icon to access an AI-generated summary for that specific email or conversation.

The newly implemented feature enables Gemini to smartly identify emails that would benefit from a summary, presenting it in a card at the top of the email. Whenever users respond to the email thread, the summary card will be updated automatically. For those who find it unnecessary, the summary card can be collapsed.

In addition, Google Chat is receiving enhancements. Gemini will now summarize messages within the home view of Chat, assisting users in recognizing which communications need immediate attention. This new functionality is available in English, Spanish, and six additional languages.

Furthermore, Gemini will be capable of analyzing and summarizing the content of shared Workspace documents. When a colleague shares a Google Doc or Slide, users will be presented with an overview in the side panel prior to accessing the document.

Google Docs is also integrating a new AI feature known as the summary building block. When Gemini generates a document summary, users can place it at the top to facilitate viewers’ understanding of the context before they begin reading. The summary can be refreshed with each edit to reflect the most current version.

Lastly, Google has introduced new dynamic layouts for Google Meet that provide users with the option to select between “room” and “individual” tiles. The room tile is suitable for scenarios where multiple participants are using a single device, while the individual tile highlights a single participant’s face.
