The Gmail app for Android is set to introduce an ‘Insert’ button to enhance its Gemini assistant functionality. This feature has been available on the web version of Gemini within Gmail since last year but was previously absent from the mobile platform. Reports indicate that the feature is now being made accessible to all Android users. This development follows the integration of Google Calendar support into Gmail’s Gemini assistant, which occurred in November 2024. Users will need to have a Gemini Advanced subscription to utilize this new feature.
New Features for Gmail’s Android App
Prior to this update, Android users utilizing the Gemini feature could generate email replies through the AI assistant, but had to manually incorporate the suggested responses into their drafts. This meant copying text from the Gemini interface or typing up responses, which many found to be a tedious process.
In contrast, the web version of Gmail benefited from the Insert button since last year. According to a report from Android Authority, the Insert button is now being introduced to the Android version of Gmail through the latest update (version 2025.01.05.715468168).

A video released by Android Authority illustrates that the new Insert button will be situated next to the Like and Dislike icons at the bottom right of the Gemini-generated replies. The button, depicted with a diagonal arrow icon, will be located to the left of the copy icon and will allow users to seamlessly add AI-generated text to their email drafts. Subsequently, users can make any necessary modifications before sending their messages.
This new Insert function forms part of the “Suggest a reply” feature within Gemini. The AI tool, developed by Google, not only assists with email replies but also has capabilities to summarize emails, retrieve information from past messages, and add events to Google Calendar. This last feature is made possible through the integration between Gemini and Google Calendar, which was implemented late last year.
The integration also allows users to pose questions to Gemini about their Google Calendar and request the creation of events, which can be derived from details found in specific emails.
