Google Sheets is set to enhance its Gemini AI tool with significant upgrades that enable the analysis and visualization of user data. This announcement was made on Wednesday, indicating that the new features will gradually be available to Google Workspace subscribers and users of the Google One AI Premium plan. Notably, the upgraded Gemini can now translate complex prompts into Python code, enabling multi-step data analysis, a step beyond its previous ability to merely convert requests into single-layer formulas.
Enhanced Features for Gemini in Google Sheets
In a recent blog post, the tech giant based in Mountain View detailed the new functionalities being introduced to the Gemini assistant within Google Sheets. These enhancements will be accessible to various user tiers, including subscribers to Google Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, and users with either Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-ons. Furthermore, subscribers of the Google One AI Premium plan will have access to these features as well.
Previously, the Gemini side panel in Sheets had limited capabilities, such as summarizing spreadsheets and creating tables through formula-based prompts. This functionality offered only a single-layer analysis of spreadsheet data due to the inherent limitations of formulas.

With the new update, Gemini will offer advanced capabilities in data analysis and visualization. The AI tool can now convert user inquiries into Python commands for execution, thus facilitating a deeper, multi-layered examination of data.
Google elaborated that Gemini is designed to respond to a variety of questions regarding the data, offering comprehensive insights and answering queries about contextual trends, patterns, and relationships among various data points. In addition, users can expect Gemini to create charts that simplify the visualization of information, which can be added as static images within the spreadsheet.
As an illustrative example, the blog post suggested that a user looking to assess the performance of a marketing campaign might request from Gemini, “Provide insights on the top three performing channels by conversion rate.” The AI would then generate a detailed breakdown supplemented by relevant charts.
Though these updated features have begun to roll out, Google anticipates that it will take approximately 15 days for all eligible users to fully access them.
