Google has unveiled the rollout of its Gemini AI chatbot within Google Docs for Android devices. Previously, this feature was exclusive to paid users of the desktop version of the platform. Now, Android users can access Gemini’s capabilities while working in Docs, allowing them to summarise text, analyze documents, and respond to user questions. However, some advanced functionalities found on the desktop version will not be available on mobile.

In a recent blog post, Google confirmed the new availability of Gemini in Docs for Android users. The company had initially integrated the Gemini side panel into the web version of Docs in 2024, but the AI chatbot was not accessible through the Android app until now. This feature is only available to business and enterprise users of Google Workspace, as well as subscribers of the Gemini Education and Gemini Education Premium add-ons.

Users can easily locate the Gemini icon at the top of Google Docs on their Android devices, which, when selected, opens a bottom sheet. Through this interface, Gemini can summarise documents, outline key points, and propose possible improvements.

Additionally, after opening a document, users have the option to engage with Gemini by posing questions about the content, with the chatbot responding accordingly. This functionality supports over 20 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

The blog outlined various ways users can benefit from Gemini, such as quickly generating summaries of lengthy research reports, answering specific inquiries regarding budget documents, and even creating initial drafts based on user prompts.

It is important to note that several advanced features are still limited to the web version of Google Docs and cannot be accessed via the Android app. These include the Help me write, Help me create, and image generation functionalities.
