The Gemini Live application on Android and iOS is introducing a real-time captions feature that allows users to see live captions of the chatbot’s responses displayed on the screen. This functionality enables users to engage in conversations with Gemini Live without the need for audio, making it particularly suitable for situations where hearing the voice is not feasible, such as in noisy environments or when hands-free communication is preferred. Additionally, Google has included customization options for font size and caption appearance.
Gemini Live Conversations Now Include Subtitles
Earlier this month, several users reported noticing a new captions feature in Gemini Live, suggesting that the company was testing it with a limited audience. It now appears that the feature is being rolled out to all users worldwide. According to a report from 9to5Google, a square icon has been added in the top-right corner of the Gemini Live interface, indicating the availability of this feature.

Staff members at Gadgets 360 confirmed that the captions feature is functional on both Android and iOS platforms, offering a consistent experience across devices. Once Gemini Live is activated, users can tap the square icon to toggle the real-time captions on or off. In cases where the device volume is muted, the application prompts users to enable the captions feature automatically. Previously, access to Gemini Live was only possible if the volume settings were audible.
When activated, real-time captions are displayed in two lines at the bottom of the screen, reflecting only the current dialogue and omitting previous exchanges. To access the full conversation transcript, users must conclude the session. It is noteworthy that captions also function during screen sharing or while using the live video feature within Gemini Live, appearing at the top of the screen in this context.
For Android users, new customization options are available under “Caption preferences,” allowing adjustments to language, text size, and caption style. This feature enables users to personalize the visual aspects of the captions, including the font style, text color, background color, and opacity settings. However, similar customization options have yet to appear for iOS users.
