The Gemini extensions are now being enhanced to operate directly on the lock screen of Android devices. Previously, while users could carry out certain functions such as activating the flashlight or setting an alarm, these actions were dependent on Google Assistant. The latest update from the tech giant based in Mountain View allows Gemini to perform these tasks autonomously on the lock screen. However, for functions that necessitate access to personal data from applications, users will still need to unlock their devices.

Gemini Extensions Now Work on the Lock Screen

Google has outlined the new functionality of the Gemini AI assistant on its support page. With this update, Gemini can now utilize extensions on the lock screen of Android devices, a feature that was initially launched last year. These extensions enable Gemini to interact with various apps and device functions to complete tasks.

Prior to this update, the extensions were functional through the web client and the Android app, but they did not work from the lock screen. This limitation meant that even simple tasks like setting an alarm required the intervention of Google Assistant.

The introduction of this feature promises a more streamlined experience for users engaging with Gemini on their lock screens. Confirmations from Gadgets 360 staff indicated that the extensions are operational on their devices’ lock screens.

Now, users can execute tasks such as answering general inquiries, setting reminders, retrieving navigation insights, or locating nearby stores directly from their lock screen. Upon activation by usual means, the redesigned Gemini interface surfaces, automatically transitioning into a full-screen view while executing the task.

This functionality is expected to be enabled by default for users who have previously used Google Assistant on their lock screens. However, those who have not activated the virtual assistant while their device is locked will need to manually enable the feature. Users can do this by accessing the Gemini app, selecting their profile icon, navigating to Settings > Gemini on lock screen, and enabling Use Gemini without unlocking.

It’s important to note that any tasks requiring access to other apps or personal information will still necessitate unlocking the device first.
