Microsoft Excel has begun testing a new AI-driven function designed to automate the process of filling cells in spreadsheets. This feature bears similarities to the functionality Google Sheets launched in June. Users can access the “COPILOT” function by inputting a natural language command and, if desired, reference specific cells for the AI to analyze. The feature can classify information, generate summaries, create tables, and more.

For instance, if a user has a column containing reviews for a coffee machine, the COPILOT function can quickly categorize this feedback. The required formula would be: “=COPILOT(“Classify this feedback”, D4:D18),” with adjustments made to ensure the cell range corresponds to the specific Excel document. The AI will then populate the designated cells with its classifications.

According to Microsoft, there are additional functionalities available with COPILOT. Examples include:

  • Generating text: =COPILOT(“Create a description for this product based on its specs”, B2:B8)
  • Summarizing text: =COPILOT(“Summarize this feedback”, A2:A20)

The COPILOT function is powered by OpenAI’s gpt-4.1-mini AI model and serves as the next phase following Microsoft’s initial LABS.GENERATIVEAI feature, which was tested in 2023. Microsoft emphasizes that users can integrate COPILOT with existing Excel functions, such as IF, SWITCH, LAMBDA, or WRAPROWS. Importantly, the information processed through COPILOT is stated to remain confidential and is not utilized for AI training purposes.

However, there are limitations to the COPILOT feature. It cannot retrieve information from outside the current spreadsheet, and users are restricted to executing 100 functions every 10 minutes. Additionally, Microsoft advises caution when using this AI tool for numerical calculations or in high-stakes situations where legal, regulatory, or compliance matters are involved, as COPILOT may produce incorrect answers.

This new feature is currently being rolled out to users on Windows and Mac within the Beta Channel, provided they have a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Microsoft anticipates refining the COPILOT function in future updates, including enhancements to its underlying model and potential web access capabilities.
