The European Commission is reassessing its investigations into major technology companies such as Apple, Meta, and Alphabet’s Google, according to a report by the Financial Times published on Tuesday.

The tech giants have reportedly reached out to US President-elect Trump, urging him to confront the regulatory pressures they face from the European Union.

A source cited in the report indicated that the outcomes of the presidential election may have influenced the review process, although it was clarified that Trump’s victory was not the catalyst for the reassessment.

This reevaluation could result in adjustments to the scope or intensity of the ongoing probes, which include all cases initiated since March 2024 under the European Union’s significant Digital Markets Act (DMA), the report stated.

The DMA represents one of the most robust regulatory frameworks aimed at addressing the market dominance of major tech firms. It outlines specific behaviors that these leading technology platforms must adhere to and allows for penalties of up to 10 percent of a company’s annual global revenue.

While the review is underway, all decisions and potential penalties will be temporarily halted, although technical assessments of the cases will continue, as noted by the newspaper.

Regulators are awaiting further political guidance for final rulings on the ongoing cases against Google, Apple, and Meta, the Financial Times mentioned.

Representatives from Apple, Meta, Google, and the European Commission have not yet responded to inquiries for comment.

The Digital Markets Act became effective in 2022, with the intention of limiting the influence of Big Tech and promoting fair competition for smaller market players.

In a related development, last week, Meta dismantled its US fact-checking initiative, marking a significant shift in its strategy for managing political content. This change aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s efforts to strengthen ties with the incoming Trump administration.

Additionally, the European Union is considering broadening its investigation into whether Elon Musk’s social media platform X has violated its content moderation policies, according to a report by Bloomberg News on Monday.
