Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI, has reached an agreement to pay Telegram $300 million (approximately Rs. 2,564 crore) to integrate its Grok chatbot into the popular messaging platform. This collaboration aims to leverage Telegram’s expansive user base of over one billion while enhancing xAI’s presence in the rapidly evolving AI sector.
As part of the one-year arrangement, xAI will also share half of any subscription revenue generated through the app, as stated by Telegram founder Pavel Durov in a post on X earlier this week. The $300 million payment will be made in a combination of cash and stock.
Durov emphasized that xAI will only have access to data that Telegram users willingly provide during their interactions with the Grok chatbot.
In response to Durov’s announcement on X, Musk mentioned that a formal agreement has yet to be finalized, though Durov clarified that both parties have reached a preliminary accord, pending finalization of the details.
This partnership could offer xAI, which acquired X earlier this year, critical data to enhance its AI models and facilitate their development.
As many open-source data sources have been exhausted, AI companies are increasingly facing difficulties in obtaining high-quality data. This has prompted firms like Meta Platforms to explore public interactions with AI for training purposes.
According to its privacy policy, X utilizes public posts from users to inform its AI model training. Whether xAI intends to follow a similar approach with Telegram data remains unclear.
xAI, which has formed multiple partnerships this year to strengthen its foothold in both AI infrastructure and financial services, has not yet provided a comment in response to a request from Reuters.
