Elon Musk, CEO of X, has rolled out a new feature that allows users of the paid subscription service to hide their Blue verification badge. The subscription, priced at $8 (approximately Rs. 660), was introduced following Musk’s acquisition of the microblogging platform.

The newly added option, as detailed on the microblogging site’s Help page, states, “Hide your checkmark: As a subscriber, you can choose to hide your checkmark on your account. The check mark will be hidden on your profile and posts. The checkmark may still appear in some places, and some features could still reveal you have an active subscription. Some features may not be available while your checkmark is hidden. We will continue to evolve this feature to make it better for you.”

According to a report from Mashable, subscribers to Twitter Blue can find the “Hide your blue checkmark” option on the “Profile customization” section of their Account Settings.

The blue check mark system was first introduced by Twitter in 2009 to help users recognize verified accounts such as celebrities, politicians, brands, and news organizations, distinguishing them from impostor or parody accounts. Prior to the subscription model, verification was provided free of charge.

Under Musk’s leadership, Twitter Blue debuted with the verification badge as one of its main benefits within weeks of the company’s acquisition last year.

On April 1, the platform revoked blue ticks from verified accounts as part of the transition to a paid subscription service that charges $8 for the blue verification badge.

Among those who lost their verified status were prominent figures such as Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Alia Bhatt, along with politicians like CM Yogi Adityanath and Rahul Gandhi, as well as cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. However, some regained their blue badges within days.

In a notable branding shift, Twitter also changed its iconic bird logo to the letter “X” on July 24, announcing a new era for the platform.

Musk, who also heads Tesla, noted that the platform has experienced a surge in monthly active users following organizational changes, with numbers reportedly surpassing 540 million.

In a post about user statistics, Musk referred to the current logo design as “interim,” hinting at potential further changes to the platform’s branding.

As reported by TechCrunch, Musk indicated that the company may continue to evolve its logo, suggesting a gradual phasing out of the Twitter brand and its associated imagery.
