Elon Musk’s social media platform X announced the return of the popular video-sharing service Vine, this time in “AI form,” as declared by the billionaire tech leader on Thursday. This development comes nearly nine years after the app was officially closed down.
Musk shared the news in a post on X, previously known as Twitter, but did not elaborate on what users can expect from the revamped version. A request for additional details sent to X by Reuters went unanswered.
Since acquiring Twitter in 2022, Musk has hinted on multiple occasions at the possibility of reviving Vine, including conducting public polls on X regarding interest in a comeback for the short-form video platform that thrived in the 2010s.
Vine was launched by Twitter in January 2013, enabling users to share brief video clips of six seconds or less. The app quickly gained traction among video creators and amassed millions of followers. However, in late 2016, Twitter announced its decision to shut down the service.
The six-second video format may prove advantageous for AI-generated content, as current AI video generation tools typically focus on producing short videos. Longer content often incurs higher production costs.
