FromSoftware revealed on Monday that its acclaimed action RPG, Elden Ring, has achieved a remarkable sales milestone of 30 million copies since its release in February 2022. This impressive figure underscores the game’s ongoing popularity, solidifying its position as the top-selling title in the studio’s history. Currently, the developers are working on a spinoff project titled Elden Ring Nightreign.
Elden Ring Sales Reach 30 Million
In a statement shared on X, FromSoftware expressed gratitude to players who continue to journey through the Lands Between. “Dearest Tarnished, we are profoundly thankful for your lasting devotion. May your path be forever guided by the Grace of Gold,” the Elden Ring account noted.
The game achieved the 30 million sales milestone within just over three years of its launch. Notably, during the past 10 months alone, an additional five million units were sold, showcasing its sustained appeal. Elden Ring previously reached the 25 million mark in June 2024, just prior to the release of its major expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree.
This expansion, which introduced new story elements, a fresh map area, additional enemies, and challenging boss encounters, garnered widespread acclaim and was lauded as the highest-rated expansion on Metacritic. Shadow of the Erdtree was nominated for the Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2024, although it ultimately lost to Astro Bot. Upon its release, the expansion quickly sold an impressive five million copies in just three days, with total sales likely increasing since then.
Future of Elden Ring
Elden Ring stands out as FromSoftware’s most lucrative franchise, surpassing the sales figures of Dark Souls 3 (2016) and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (2019), both of which have each sold over 10 million copies. In fact, Elden Ring’s sales have now exceeded the total combined sales of the entire Dark Souls series, which has shipped over 27 million copies across three titles.
Despite these successes, FromSoftware has indicated that there are no immediate plans for a sequel to Elden Ring, even though multiple projects are currently underway. Hidetaka Miyazaki, the studio’s president and director of Elden Ring, remarked in December 2024 that the focus is on other initiatives. “We don’t have any particular plans for Elden Ring 2,” he stated during the PlayStation Partner Awards 2024 Japan Asia event. However, he did hint at the possibility of future developments related to the Elden Ring franchise. “I would like to tell you that we are not ruling out the development of the IP ‘Elden Ring’ in some form in the future,” Miyazaki mentioned.
Shortly thereafter, at The Game Awards 2025, FromSoftware announced Elden Ring Nightreign, a new spinoff multiplayer co-op action survival game, which is scheduled for release on May 30 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X.
