CD Projekt Red has announced a significant update for Cyberpunk 2077, marking the final major enhancement before the studio shifts focus to new projects. This latest patch, labeled ‘Update 2.1,’ introduces several long-awaited features, including a functional metro system, the option to spend time with romantic partners, a radio system, and numerous quality-of-life improvements. The update is scheduled to launch alongside the Ultimate Edition on December 5, with availability set for 4:30 PM IST in India and 12 PM CET in Europe. Importantly, this update will be free to download, although it will not be included in the physical disc versions set to release for PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. However, the previously released 2.0 Update from September will be included in all versions, completely revamping the perk system and adding new tech augmentations absent in the original 2020 game.
Once Update 2.1 goes live, players controlling the protagonist V will be able to utilize the in-game metro service for travel between 19 different locations along five railway lines. Accessing this public transit system requires a special card, allowing players to relax and take in the sights of Night City alongside other NPCs who may be glued to their screens or catching some sleep. The metro feature, first unveiled in the cinematic trailer for Cyberpunk 2077, finally becomes a reality after players complete the Konpeki Plaza sequence. For those who prefer a quicker transit experience, it’s possible to skip the travel cutscene and directly enter the next location. The update will also introduce a radio system, enabling players to browse various frequencies and enjoy music while navigating the city or driving; however, the music will pause during in-game dialogues.
Players have long desired the ability to enjoy moments with their in-game romantic partners, and Update 2.1 provides that opportunity. V can now invite romantic interests to any of their apartments an unlimited number of times, contingent upon successfully completing the romance storyline. Racing enthusiasts will also appreciate the introduction of car races, accessible by visiting red flag icons scattered around the map after completing ‘The Beast in Me’ quest. Players can look forward to more sophisticated AI among enemy racers, promising a more exhilarating racing experience. Additionally, the update features sightseeing binoculars, enhancing the ability to observe the diverse landscapes within the Cyberpunk universe.
Among other enhancements in this update are improved bike combat mechanics, various bug fixes, and refined boss encounters. Specific details about these improvements remain vague, but the patch notes reveal that the formidable Adam Smasher will now employ the Sandevistan perk for greater mobility, allowing him to dash across the map and engage players effectively. Update 2.1 also incorporates visual and lighting enhancements, weapon balance adjustments, new bikes for purchase, and vehicular tricks. Following a challenging launch in 2020, marked by performance issues and bugs, Cyberpunk 2077 has undergone extensive refinement, now achieving a much-improved state, aided by the Phantom Liberty expansion, which has earned nominations in The Game Awards 2023.
