CD Projekt Red has announced the upcoming release of the Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition, which combines the base game with the recently introduced Phantom Liberty expansion. Scheduled for launch on December 5, the Ultimate Edition will be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. The Xbox version will feature a full physical release with three discs, while the PS5 edition will contain a disc for the main game along with a download voucher for the expansion from the PlayStation store. In contrast, the PC version will provide a redeemable code for the GOG client, foregoing physical media entirely, thereby allowing the developer to retain the full revenue from sales.
A CD Projekt Red spokesperson explained the differing formats for the Phantom Liberty inclusion, attributing it to specific technical requirements for each platform. This has led to some disappointment among PlayStation users who have been advocating for physical media preservation, especially as the trend among major publishers shifts increasingly towards digital. Industry analyst John Linneman from Digital Foundry speculated that the developer may have avoided creating a separate disc version for the PS5, noting the somewhat peculiar situation that Cyberpunk 2077 was never previously launched physically on the latest generation consoles. Consequently, this suggests that a dedicated three-disc build could have been produced. Interestingly, Cyberpunk 2077 has taken the lead over Baldur’s Gate 3, which was also slated for a three-disc Xbox Series X release.
Players using older consoles, such as the PS4 and Xbox One, will not have access to the Ultimate Edition, as the 2.0 update and the Phantom Liberty expansion are exclusively available for current-generation systems. The complete edition of Cyberpunk 2077 is anticipated to be priced at $60 (approximately Rs. 5,000), with physical copies set to retail at select retailers starting December 5. PC gamers will have the option to purchase the Ultimate Edition digitally through GOG, while Steam users can acquire the bundle, which is currently available at Rs. 2,758 as part of the ongoing Autumn Sale. The release of this edition marks the conclusion of post-launch content for Cyberpunk 2077, as developers prepare to transition to Unreal Engine 5 for upcoming projects, including a Cyberpunk sequel and a range of newly announced Witcher titles.
The game faced significant challenges upon its initial launch in 2020, particularly for PS4 users, who experienced severe performance issues, including low frame rates and frequent crashes, prompting Sony to remove it from the platform temporarily. Following extensive bug fixes and updates, Cyberpunk 2077 saw a notable resurgence last year, driven by the popularity of the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime on Netflix, which drew many players back into the world of Night City. The studio released a 2.0 update in September, overhauling the perk system and implementing limitations on tech augmentations in preparation for the Phantom Liberty expansion.
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition is set to release on December 5 across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. The base game and the Phantom Liberty expansion will also be available for purchase separately on these platforms.
