In late June, Ars Technica hosted its second Ars Live event of the year, featuring climate scientist Zeke Hausfather. Known for his work with the financial technology company Stripe and the Berkeley Earth Project, which monitors global surface temperatures, Hausfather shared insights on the recent surge in record-high temperatures. The discussion also delved into his journey into climate science.

Hausfather took an unconventional path to his current role. His journey began with climate activism during his college years, followed by co-founding several cleantech startups. His early involvement in the academic climate blogging community inspired him to pursue a deeper understanding of climate science. He gradually realized that his passion for climate work was more compelling than his business endeavors. This realization led him to take a hiatus from the corporate world to earn a PhD in climate science, allowing him to balance both sectors throughout his career.

The dialogue then shifted to the historical data surrounding Earth’s surface temperatures and Berkeley Earth’s contribution to an alternative methodology for temperature calculation. While discussions about the validity of temperature records have evolved over the years, Berkeley Earth has significantly contributed to affirming their reliability, helping to quell previous controversies.
