Anthropic is reportedly developing a voice chat feature for its proprietary AI chatbot, Claude. Sources indicate that the company is aiming to unveil this feature, termed ‘voice mode’, within this month. While competitors like OpenAI and Google have already integrated dedicated voice functionalities in their chatbots, ChatGPT and Gemini respectively, Anthropic has primarily concentrated on a text-based interface. This news follows closely on the heels of Anthropic’s recent introduction of an educational plan akin to OpenAI’s Edu subscription.

Claude to Reportedly Get a Voice Mode

A Bloomberg report reveals that the San Francisco-based AI company is poised to launch its new voice mode feature soon. Quoting an unnamed individual familiar with the situation, the report suggests that the rollout may commence in April. Initially, the feature will be accessible to a limited group of users, although these plans are subject to change.

As part of this development, Anthropic intends to introduce three distinct voice options, named Airy, Mellow, and Buttery, with the latter featuring a British accent. Notably, the report cites an app researcher known as “M1Astra,” who discovered this information in the code of Claude’s iOS application and shared it with Bloomberg. Detailed specifications regarding the voices or additional functionalities remain scarce.

The report leaves some questions unanswered, including whether the voice mode will function solely as a basic text-to-speech option or if it will feature a more human-like quality, similar to ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode. It also remains uncertain whether the feature will be available to all users or restricted to paid subscribers. The three voice options are anticipated to vary in pitch, timbre, and intonation.

Anthropic is entering a competitive space, as major companies focused on artificial intelligence, including OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and even Apple, have recently rolled out or announced voice-enabled conversation features. Additionally, Meta is reportedly working on a two-way voice chat mode for its own AI initiatives.

Despite being late to the voice chatbot sector, Anthropic has been proactive with several new feature releases in 2025. Last month, the company’s researchers published a paper detailing advancements in AI model reasoning processes. The firm also added a web search function to Claude and launched the Claude 3.7 Sonnet AI model, which boasts enhanced reasoning abilities.
