Anthropic has unveiled a new Voice Mode capability for its Claude chatbot. On Tuesday, the AI company announced the introduction of a real-time two-way voice conversation feature, which will be accessible through Claude’s mobile applications. While the rollout marks a significant enhancement, it comes after competitors like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Microsoft’s Copilot have already established similar functionalities.
The Voice Mode feature is being made available to all Claude users, yet some advanced functionalities will be restricted to those with paid subscriptions.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Anthropic’s official account confirmed that the Voice Mode feature is currently in beta and exclusively supports the English language. Claude users will begin to receive this feature on their mobile apps in the coming weeks.
“We’re rolling out voice mode in beta on mobile. Try starting a voice conversation and asking Claude to summarize your calendar or search your docs,” the tweet read.
According to details on its support page, Anthropic describes Voice Mode as enabling users to engage in complete spoken conversations with Claude on both iOS and Android devices. This feature is comparable to similar offerings from Gemini Live and ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode. Although the voice produced during interactions is not particularly expressive, it avoids the characteristic robotic tone typically associated with text-to-speech systems, providing responses in a neutral yet fluent manner.
One distinctive feature of Claude’s Voice Mode is the ability for users to view key points from their conversation on the screen while interacting with the AI. Participants in conversations can seamlessly switch between text and voice modes without losing the continuity of dialogue. Subscribers with premium access can also engage in voice conversations to interact with their Google Docs, Calendar, Gmail, and perform web searches.
To utilize the Voice Mode feature, users can open the Claude mobile application and click the Voice Mode button (represented by a sound wave icon next to the microphone icon) located in the text input area. After selecting their preferred voice from several options, users can initiate a voice conversation.
The interface includes multiple new controls; after speaking a message, users will need to tap an up arrow to send it to Claude. The stop square feature allows users to interrupt Claude’s response, a plus icon provides access to the camera, photos, or files, and an X button exits voice mode altogether.
Importantly, users on the free tier will have a limit of approximately 20-30 voice messages per session, with the limit resetting on a daily basis.
