The Chrome web browser developed by Google could be valued at approximately $50 billion (around Rs. 4,26,756 crore), according to Gabriel Weinberg, the CEO of DuckDuckGo, who provided testimony during the Justice Department’s ongoing antitrust trial against the tech giant.

Weinberg expressed that if Chrome were to be placed on the market, its worth could exceed $50 billion, a figure that is well beyond DuckDuckGo’s financial reach. The statement came as he testified about the significant user base that contributes to Chrome’s valuation.

This testimony is part of a three-week hearing aimed at addressing concerns regarding Alphabet’s Google and its monopoly over internet search. Last year, Judge Amit Mehta concluded that Google had illegally monopolized the market, and discussions are underway regarding potential remedies proposed by antitrust regulators. The Department of Justice, along with a coalition of states, has suggested that Google should consider divesting its widely-used Chrome browser.

Weinberg’s estimate of $50 billion stands in stark contrast to the approximately $20 billion (about Rs. 1,70,743 crore) valuation given by Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Mandeep Singh in November. This significant difference in valuation may deter prospective buyers should the court mandate a sale of Chrome.

Earlier in the case, executives from artificial intelligence companies like OpenAI and Perplexity indicated an interest in acquiring Chrome if a divestment is ordered by the court.
