OpenAI has made significant updates to ChatGPT on WhatsApp, enhancing the user experience of its AI chatbot. Launched in December 2024, the official phone number for ChatGPT allows users to save it on WhatsApp for direct communication. Initially, the service supported only text input, but the San Francisco-based AI company has now expanded its functionalities to include image and audio message inputs. This global rollout enables users to explore these new features.
ChatGPT on WhatsApp Receives New Enhancements
According to a report from Android Authority, users can now send images and voice messages to the ChatGPT service through WhatsApp. While the chatbot is capable of receiving these inputs, it currently only responds with text messages, lacking the ability to generate images or engage in two-way voice conversations at this time.
With the introduction of image processing capabilities, users can inquire about images or even seek ratings for their memes. The AI employs computer vision to analyze visual information and respond accordingly. It is important to note that any images sent will be processed on OpenAI’s servers, so users should refrain from sending images that contain personal or sensitive information.
Voice messaging adds further convenience, enabling users to speak their queries instead of typing, especially for lengthy prompts. The AI can effectively process these voice messages and will reply through text outputs.
Additionally, OpenAI plans to enable users to sign into their ChatGPT accounts via WhatsApp, although the specifics regarding any additional benefits remain unclear. This feature would allow synchronization of chats between the WhatsApp interface and the ChatGPT app or web client for users signed into the same account.
Users can reach the ChatGPT service by saving the official phone number, +1-800-242-8478, in their device contacts and finding it on WhatsApp. For those in Canada and the United States, the phone number can also be dialed directly to initiate a conversation with the chatbot. Notably, OpenAI has not disclosed which AI model is powering this service.
