On Tuesday, ChatGPT on WhatsApp underwent a significant enhancement. OpenAI had initially introduced a dedicated phone number in December 2024, enabling users to interact with the chatbot directly within WhatsApp. With this latest update, the AI platform’s chat feature can now create images in response to user prompts. This addition follows only four months after the company enhanced the extension to support both image and voice inputs.
ChatGPT on WhatsApp to Allow Image Generation
OpenAI’s official account shared the news on X (previously Twitter), announcing that users can now request image generation from ChatGPT via WhatsApp. While the specifics were not detailed, this feature is likely powered by GPT-4o, the same large language model utilized for image generation across the chatbot’s web, desktop, and mobile platforms.

Staff from Gadgets 360 had the opportunity to test this new functionality, discovering that it typically takes about two minutes for the chatbot to create an image, comparable in quality to those generated via the app and website. Users who have not linked their OpenAI account with WhatsApp will only be permitted to generate one image every 24 hours.
In addition to image creation, the chatbot can address text-based inquiries, generate content, analyze images, and respond to voice messages—though only in text format, without a two-way voice interaction feature. Despite continuous updates to its knowledge base, ChatGPT on WhatsApp does not have browsing capabilities and cannot provide answers about recent or current events.
To engage with ChatGPT on WhatsApp, users may save the dedicated number +1-800-242-8478 (1-800-ChatGPT) or follow this link. Once they have saved the contact, they can refresh their list in the messenger app to find ChatGPT. Additionally, residents of the US and Canada can call this toll-free number from any phone—be it a smartphone, feature phone, or landline—to communicate with ChatGPT, although this call feature is limited to 15 minutes per month.
