OpenAI’s ChatGPT experienced major outages on Tuesday, affecting users across multiple regions. Many reported issues with the chatbot, which displayed a “Hmm…something seems to have gone wrong” error message when attempting to load. Users of social media platforms such as X and Reddit shared their frustrations regarding the downtime.

Data from Downdetector indicated that problems began around 3 AM ET, impacting users globally. OpenAI’s status page confirmed that users reported “elevated error rates and latency,” affecting not only ChatGPT but also their Sora text-to-video AI tool and OpenAI APIs. By 5:23 AM ET, OpenAI had noted the elevated error rates specifically for Sora and later classified the overall issues as a “partial outage.”

By 6:32 PM ET, OpenAI’s tracker indicated a “full recovery in the API,” stating that “nearly all ChatGPT components are now functioning properly for all users.” However, issues persisted with the voice mode feature, which continued to experience higher error rates.

While some users encountered significant delays and slow responses from ChatGPT, others reported no issues at all, suggesting that the outages were not universally experienced.

Perplexity, an AI search engine utilizing OpenAI models, also experienced operational disruptions. Its status page reported similar slowness and elevated error rates, with Downdetector noting that issues began around 7 AM ET.

Update, June 10th: Details regarding OpenAI and Perplexity’s status updates have been noted.
