The macOS version of ChatGPT is set to introduce a new feature that enhances coding assistance for software developers. Announced last week, this innovative addition allows the OpenAI chatbot to integrate seamlessly with integrated development environments (IDEs), enabling direct code editing within the user’s preferred programming tools. This update aims to streamline the coding process, eliminating the need for manual code transfers and enhancing efficiency. The feature follows the recent enhancement of the Canvas functionality for ChatGPT on Mac, which was rolled out just a couple of months prior.
ChatGPT for macOS Introduces Code Editing Feature
The official OpenAI Developers account shared the announcement in a post on X, previously known as Twitter. Users had previously found it challenging to receive coding support from the ChatGPT macOS desktop application. Although the AI could interpret the user’s existing code through screenshot inputs and generate modifications based on textual prompts, the process of transferring the edited code was cumbersome.
The absence of an automated workflow meant users had to manually copy and paste changes, carefully ensuring that only the updated segments were included while avoiding duplicate lines. This manual operation not only consumed time but also increased the risk of errors, which required further attention to correct.
This feature is currently being rolled out to subscribers of ChatGPT Pro, Plus, and Team tiers. OpenAI indicated that users on the Enterprise and Edu plans, along with those utilizing the free version, will gain access to the feature next week.
Importantly, this new capability leverages OpenAI’s “work with apps” functionality, which entered beta testing in November 2024. This feature allows ChatGPT to access specific applications on a user’s device to execute tasks autonomously. Similar functionalities have already been offered by other AI platforms like Cursor and GitHub Copilot.
In January, OpenAI further enhanced the Canvas feature for ChatGPT on macOS. This pop-up interface, designed for collaborative work, enables users to edit projects involving coding or creative writing alongside the chatbot. Recent updates have also included support for the 01 AI model.
