Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) revealed the name of its new 5G service on Wednesday through a post on its social media platform. The service, named Q-5G (Quantum 5G), follows the operator’s recent initiative to engage the public in the naming process prior to the launch of its 5G trials. In addition, BSNL has commenced the rollout of the Q-5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) service in selected regions, promising “blazing fast” network speeds and eliminating the need for a SIM card.
BSNL Q-5G Announced
In a tweet from its official account on X (formerly known as Twitter), BSNL celebrated the announcement of Q-5G. The state-owned telecommunications provider stated that the service’s name was determined by citizen input, symbolizing the “power, speed, and future” of its 5G network.

In conjunction with the Q-5G announcement, BSNL introduced the Quantum 5G FWA in select Indian markets. This new service is marketed as a high-speed internet solution tailored for businesses rather than individual consumers. It is notable for being the first 5G FWA that does not require a SIM card or wiring and is based on indigenous technology.
According to BSNL, the Quantum 5G FWA will facilitate “high-speed data without voice capabilities.” The service will have starting prices set at Rs. 999 per month in India.
This announcement follows BSNL’s earlier appeal to the public for feedback on naming its 5G service. In addition, the company plans to enhance its 4G services with the installation of an additional 100,000 4G towers to add to the already existing 100,000 towers that were successfully installed last month.
Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, Dr. Chandrasekhar Pemmasani, indicated that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) would seek cabinet approval for the expansion of BSNL’s 4G services.
“After successfully deploying 100,000 towers equipped with optimal 4G technology, we aim to secure Cabinet and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s approval for another 100,000 towers,” the minister reportedly stated in an interview.
Furthermore, BSNL is looking to plan additional deployments of 4G and 5G equipment while working on monetizing its assets to improve its cash flow.
