On Thursday, Brave launched a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature for its Brave Search platform. Earlier this year, the San Francisco-based firm had already introduced the ‘Answer with AI’ capability, which provides AI-generated summaries for user queries. The latest enhancement, termed AI chat mode, enables users to engage in follow-up questions within a chat-like interface. This new feature is currently accessible to all users of Brave’s search engine.
Brave Search Introduces AI Chat Mode
In a blog post, Brave elaborated on the mechanics of its new AI feature. This functionality is part of Brave Search, a privacy-centric search engine launched in 2022. The initial AI summary capability introduced earlier this year aligns with similar offerings, such as Google’s AI Overviews, by providing succinct, intelligent summaries for search queries.
Unlike Google’s feature, Brave’s AI chat mode encourages users to delve deeper by posing multiple follow-up queries. The chat mode interface appears at the bottom of the ‘Answer with AI’ section as a slim text field. Upon entering an additional question, a separate chat interface is triggered above the search results, allowing the AI to respond directly to the user’s inquiry.

Staff members from Gadgets 360 had the opportunity to test this new feature and noted that users can efficiently ask multiple follow-up questions. The interface remains minimalistic, characterized by rapid inference times and quick processing capabilities. Moreover, the chatbot provides citations for all referenced websites above its responses and issues warnings for users to verify essential information.
The AI chat mode also includes features for users to copy responses and offer feedback, whether by rating with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down. Users are further enabled to open the queried information in a new tab and share the generated responses by easily copying the URL.
Brave asserts that its AI features maintain the search engine’s privacy standards, ensuring that user profiles are not created and queries are not stored. Conversations held with the AI are treated with the same confidentiality.
The company revealed that the AI chat mode integrates both its proprietary large language model (LLM) along with external AI models. The data used for generating responses is based on Brave Search’s results, which aims to keep the outputs relevant and mitigate the risks of AI-generated inaccuracies.
